Winning story in the Mirror Lakes and Central Otago Short Story competition: Sparrow's Eggs

Winner of the Mirror Lakes and Central Otago Senior Short Story competition Alan Whitaker, of Alexandra. Alexandra man Alan Whitaker was the deserved winner of the senior Mirror Lakes and Central Otago short story competition with this entry, Sparrow’s Eggs . The Mirror will publish the stories that were place first second and third in the senior and junior competitions over the next six weeks. Chief judge Diane Brown made the following comments about his story: I am pleased to say that for me, Sparrow’s Eggs fulfilled my somewhat demanding criteria. A simple premise, a boy of eight, climbing a tree in search of sparrow’s eggs. The description of the baby sparrows is vivid. All is not as it seems, however, the writer has not gone in for a simple trick ending. As a reader I was alerted near the beginning of the story, thus by the end, I had fully bought into it. Sparrow’s Eggs is an evocative and moving portrayal of youth and old age, the past and the present. It has a controversial last line, and is a worthy winner.
