Chief judge Diane Brown made the following comments about his story: I am pleased say that for me, Sparrow’s Eggs fulfilled my somewhat demanding criteria. A simple premise, a boy of eight, climbing a tree in search of sparrow’s eggs. The description of the sparrows is vivid. All is as it seems, however, the writer has gone in for a simple trick ending. As a reader I was alerted near the beginning of the story, thus by the end, I had fully bought into it. Sparrow’s Eggs is an evocative and moving portrayal of youth and old age, the past and the present. It has a controversial last line, and is a worthy winner.
